René Descartes
(1596 — 1650)
René Descartes is generally considered to be the father of modern philosophy — no one knows who the mother was, leading many to believe that modern philosophy was adopted (and leading others to believe that philosophy's a bit of a bastard); though it doesn't like to talk about it.
After (supposedly) doubting everything, Descartes reconstructed the external world solely on the principle of his own consciousness, which disturbed his next-door neighbours rather a lot.
